Session Description:

This presentation provides an engaging and interactive approach to discovering clues
from a mock teen’s bedroom. The demonstration will help adult participants stay
informed of whether youth may be experimenting with or using tobacco products,
alcohol, or other drugs.

 

Session Objectives:

1. Investigate and explore a teen’s dwelling and learn signs that are indicative of
substance use and risky behaviors.
2. Gain insight into substance use/misuse trends among youth, drug paraphernalia,
and the concealment of drugs and alcohol to help prevent the negative
consequences that accompany poor decision-making and addiction.
3. Identify ways to talk with youth about substance use/misuse.
4. Learn resources and support services for youth needing assistance with
substance use/misuse.

 

Session Engagement:

Explore bedroom display. Tips for participants to utilize as conversation starters with youth. Resources for participants seeking support services for youth. Q&A at the conclusion of the presentation.

Regina Propst, BA, CPS, Program Manager

Insight Human Services

Regina Propst is a Certified Prevention Specialist in the State of North Carolina. She has been in the substance misuse prevention field for over 20 years. Regina is currently a Program Manager for Insight Human Services, which is based in Winston-Salem and serves 18 counties for
prevention services in North Carolina. She manages several grants in Iredell, Yadkin, and Surry counties. She is a member of numerous coalitions and collaboratives throughout the counties she serves including the Drug Alcohol Coalition of Iredell.

Ashley Milam, CPS, Program Specialist

Insight Human Services

With over eight years of dedicated experience in substance misuse prevention, Ashley is a highly qualified Certified Prevention Specialist serving communities in North Carolina. She is actively engaged in implementing evidence-based prevention strategies and fostering collaborative efforts at the local level. Insight Human Services, a non-profit organization headquartered in Winston-Salem, specializes in prevention, intervention, and treatment services related to substance misuse. Currently, the organization extends its prevention initiatives across 18 counties statewide. Ashley provides targeted prevention services in Iredell, Yadkin, and Surry Counties. Her role involves active
participation in coalitions, community collaboratives, and various stakeholder meetings to promote substance misuse prevention initiatives. She delivers prevention education within schools and
afterschool programs, aiming to equip youth with the knowledge and skills necessary to make healthy choices. Ashley specializes in implementing and facilitating several impactful prevention programs,
including Catch My Breath: (A respiratory health and substance misuse prevention curriculum tailored for youth), Too Good for Drugs: (A substance misuse prevention program designed to build
resilience and decision-making skills), and Life Skills: (A comprehensive program focusing on developing essential life competencies to prevent substance use). Her work emphasizes community collaboration, evidence-based practices, and youth engagement to foster healthier, more resilient communities.
